what is the smp

SMP? It was the first time I ever heard of such a term or a job. 'Ok.. so what does the social media producer actually do? The middle man? The media peoples' person? Social media right.. facebook, twitter, myspace, forums, friendster... heck, there's so many. do yahoo communities count?'

Those thoughts ran through my mind and so I decided to do a little bit of research coming into this post... and I came across this Yahoo! Southeast advertorial that helped cleared the shroud:

'As part of your daily responsibilities, you will be at the forefront of driving our news articles, blogs, discussions, polls and community activities through social media networks with the goal of attracting a wider audience to Yahoo!

An established personal online brand is an ideal. As a power user in social media, you must have at least 300 followers on Twitter, at least 200 connections on LinkedIn and at least 400 friends on Facebook.

You need to have a passion for social media and a thorough knowledge of the industry. You will be expected to flag trends and be aware of new social media sites on the horizon."

So it raises the question...

what if you're not a social butterfly? How can you make connections and networks when you don't have any to begin with? How does one intent on becoming a social media producer start out?

I hope to understand the role more in the coming weeks during lectures and tutorials.
