tut 5 do up for SMP

1. Details of your proposed individual Social Media Producer task

a) I’m looking into the possibility of trying to tap into the web designer community that I’ve known for quite a few years, being the administrator of an online forum. I would want to get them to post up their web designs. At the same time, it would encourage other website designers across the Internet to post up their designs as well, creating a tribe in the process.

b) If Plan A does not work out, I will to another group in which I’m also closely knitted to on the forum – the photographers. Like myself, I’m an avid photographer and have my own share of networks of photographers. I will look to publicize mytribe as another outlet for them to post up their photos as well as to build up more networks.

2) Details of your individual contribution to the tutorial specific tasks

- As my tutorial is in charge of the facebook/twitter group for mytribe, we decided to have 2 people in charge of the group in slotted weeks. I would contribute by monitoring the number of people daily joining the page. To encourage people to join the group, I would stimulate interest, interaction and publicity by posting up relevant links. This will not only apply to just my allotted week, but it will be ongoing throughout the semester.

3) Personal timeline

-March 17: Draft SMP project outline due

-April 10: My tribe project launches

-May 26: Final written report task due

Ongoing: Monitoring facebook page, posting and updating relevant links and stimulating interest

4) Personal project goals and self-assessment criteria

- Be aware of the realistic things that can be done and assess the areas that went wrong during the course of the semester.

- Interaction and constructive criticism to fellow mytribe members.

- Contribute at least one piece of work to the POOL and mytribe media.

- Be participative, be it in tutorial or group work

bummer

i've hit a roadblock.

apparently, the 'designers' i thought that I could approach.. apparently aren't designers 'designers'. What they did was just simply 'borrow' a template somewhere on the net and made it their own. Basically, the forum front page is nothing more than a copied version of some other website out there. I asked my fellow admin if this was true.. and he confirmed it.

So there goes my initial plan of getting a tribe of web designers to put up their stuff on POOL and mytribe on fb.

What do I do now? Do I have a plan B?

It irks me even more when I sacrificed 2 years of my youth to serve compulsory national service (that is army) back home. Those 2 years could have been something, could have been done building up networks. It's not that I don't have any networks, its just that I'm not sure of what I have will be sufficient enough.. or deemed 'contributory worthy' to be uploaded on POOL. Argh.

If what it is worth, I do have contacts who are musicians, pretty good photographers and short film makers. But with youtube and flickr a virtual haven for both categories, its going to prove a stumbling block. and an extra dose of convincing.

This has me thinking more of the role of the SMP... is she/he someone just confined to a desk working his way behind the computer/laptop? Without a doubt, he has to go out into the field. But if we're talking about breaching international bounderies, how is that possible? Through online networking? Sure, it's heaps fast.. but with it comes the issue of credibility and trust.

Trust - if the contacts you meet agree and commit to help you in any form of way.
Credibility - whether the contacts you meet and make 'friends' with are the real deal.

oh and i've done up the first draft SMP that should have been completed last week.

and now for the hard part

in tutorial group today, I pitched the idea of getting some web designers that I've known on an online forum that I'm on to present and showcase the designs that they have. The evidence is on the new frontpage that they've designed for the forum. The news section is always up to date and they clearly have a passion for what they love.

The only part now is convincing.

The problem is that I've left most of my admin duties to a good friend of mine on the forum. I left the forum late last year when I was busy preparing to come to Melbourne. Thus, I wasn't exactly on deck to see the progress and the hard work these web designers have done over the past months. Even though I know these web designers, I haven't had any form of communication nor rapport with either of them. I guess I count myself lucky as I am still in good contact with my 'stand-in' admin.. but that's when the luck ends. The hard part now is reaching out to these web designers and trying to convince them to showcase their work and talents.

I'll probably sell them the idea that photographers, videographers and guitarists/singers are the ones claiming fame on youtube and other social media. Web designers are essentially 'the ones who do the dirty work and no one really appreciates them'. So this is a great opportunity for them to show the online community on POOL with a mytribe theme what they can do. Blogs or someone's fancy blogshop are always on the lookout for decorative designs... and I think this is where the web designers can step in and be counted. Like I've reiterated during tutorial last week, the future of media is online. What captures the attention of us online surfers is simply the stunning visual arts and effects that we constantly see on many sites. The point is to leave a good impression, because that counts alot. One of the many factors why Obama became president was that he had a very basic yet powerful design on his 'support' web page. People were lured to it more than McKain's messy page, with tons of links and adverts all over the place (I wish I could show it, but the links have long been removed. If you followed that campaign, you'll know what I'm talking about)

As for the content producer concept, I think my group is onto something good. We just need to have a concrete idea and flesh it out, which I'm quite confident we'll be able to in the coming weeks.

job up ahead..

so for week 3's tutorial, a draft as the SMP (note, all these are just brainstorm ideas.)...

Communities:
1) Forums

The strategies for recruitment is kind of standard, I'm still trying to find USP (unique selling point) that Pool and mytribe have.. but anyway these strategies that I thought of:

1) "There's another outlet besides Youtube to showcase your masterpieces and talents!"
In other words, promoting mytribe and POOL via facebook and twitter.

2) "Furthermore, media professionals of all sorts are going to look at them...'
3) A pioneer in Pool, mytribe.
4) Potential job opportunities?
5) Better critiques and comments than Youtube
6) Monthly competitions within different categories with REAL prizes?

My individual contribution to my tut (facebook and twitter) will be these:

1) Make audio podcast for the online feature - if possible.

2) Monitor the number of people joining the group. Stimulate interest and post links to keep it going.

3) Get in touch with the creatives people - photographers, musicians, web designers, videographers. Try to convince them to join the mytribe facebook page.

Timeline:

-March 17: Draft SMP project outline due

-April 10: My tribe project launches

-May 26: Final written report task due

Personal goals and self assessment:

- I would have to at least contribute one piece of media to the mytribe Media.

- Be actively involved within the tutorial group in terms of criticism, collaborativeness and initiative.

what is the smp

SMP? It was the first time I ever heard of such a term or a job. 'Ok.. so what does the social media producer actually do? The middle man? The media peoples' person? Social media right.. facebook, twitter, myspace, forums, friendster... heck, there's so many. do yahoo communities count?'

Those thoughts ran through my mind and so I decided to do a little bit of research coming into this post... and I came across this Yahoo! Southeast advertorial that helped cleared the shroud:

'As part of your daily responsibilities, you will be at the forefront of driving our news articles, blogs, discussions, polls and community activities through social media networks with the goal of attracting a wider audience to Yahoo!

An established personal online brand is an ideal. As a power user in social media, you must have at least 300 followers on Twitter, at least 200 connections on LinkedIn and at least 400 friends on Facebook.

You need to have a passion for social media and a thorough knowledge of the industry. You will be expected to flag trends and be aware of new social media sites on the horizon."

So it raises the question...

what if you're not a social butterfly? How can you make connections and networks when you don't have any to begin with? How does one intent on becoming a social media producer start out?

I hope to understand the role more in the coming weeks during lectures and tutorials.
